Most folks know that residential relocations require a lot of time and effort before moving day arrives, making sure your home is clean, boxes are packed, and a game plan is in place. And moving day itself will require much of your energy and attention—you'll be in and out of your current and new homes, making multiple trips back and forth between the two. But after the move is completed, you'll still find yourself spending a lot of time unpacking every box filled with your household belongings.

American Fargo Moving & Storage is a seasoned moving and storage company that's been completing relocations of all shapes and sizes since we first opened our doors back in 1949. While we provide full-service packing solutions to our customers that includes unpacking boxes at the end of moving day, we're here to inform homeowners about the benefits of color-coding your boxes to make this final part of your move as fast and efficient as possible.

How Color-Coding Helps Streamline Your Move

After all your boxes have been unloaded at your new address, you still have the tedious task ahead of unpacking all your belongings. This is the part of your relocation where color-coding can make a huge difference. If you make sure all boxes with kitchenware, for example, have a strip of blue tape or a blue label on them, your movers will easily be able to identify where in your home to place that box, making unpacking much more manageable!

Instead of deciphering messy handwriting or looking all over a box to find where the contents were scribbled on the outside, a distinct line of tape across the top will make unloading the moving trucks and setting up your new home as simple and streamlined as ever.

How to Color-Code Your Boxes for Moving Day

While color-coding boxes may sound straightforward, there are a few steps to remember in order to make sure the whole process is seamless. Here's what we recommend doing to ensure your move goes smoothly and quickly:

  1. Purchasing Materials: Buy a set of colored labels or colored tape featuring at least 6 distinct colors, depending on the size of your home and amount of belongings.
  2. Create a Color Key: Make a key for your color-coded boxes that clearly shows which color corresponds with which room in your home. Make sure to print the key before moving day, otherwise you may accidentally pack up your printer before you've made a hard copy!
  3. Color-Code Boxes at Origin: We recommend adding the colored tape or label to a box as soon as it is packed and ready to go in order to avoid confusion later on.
  4. Hang Color Key at New Home: Tape copies of your color-code key around your new home, in hallways or on doors so that movers can easily determine where to set each box.
  5. Communicate with Your Team: Make sure to tell your movers about your color-coding system so that they understand your process and know what is expected.
