2 dogs in a moving box

According to the National Pet Owners Survey of 2017-2018, 68% of American households have a pet dog, cat, or small animal. Well over half the country loves having a furry friend and companion around the home. However, there are some challenges that come with pet ownership, such as regular walks, flea dips, and moving with a pet from time-to-time.

Things to Consider When Moving with a Pet

If you are relocating to a new home and own a pet, the trip can be a lot more complicated. At A-1 Fargo, we can help you with all the other aspects of relocating a home. From packing up dog toys to reassembling the cat tower, our Miami movers have the training needed for a swift and organized transition. Yet, you'll still need to manage the transport of your pet to that new home. To make your life a little easier, we've put together a few things to consider when moving with a pet, including:

  • Local Laws: Whether you are moving into a planned community across town or to another country, there will be some rules and regulations regarding pets. Check to see if your breed and size of dog is allowed, and in the case of an international move, whether you'll need to put your pet into quarantine.
  • Travel Arrangements: It's also important to think about how you'll get your dog, cat, or ferret to their new home. If traveling by car, make sure to arrange plenty of stops along the way for walks and food. You might also want to take your pet for a test drive to make sure they are comfortable on the road.
  • Microchipping: It's also a good idea to get your pet microchipped before the big moving day. Include your contact information and the contact information of a relative on the chip. If your pet runs off during a short stop somewhere, whoever finds him will have twice as much chance of finding the owners!
  • Pet Papers: While at the veterinarian's office for that microchip, you should also get your pet's health check-up and any necessary vaccinations. Many countries require rabies vaccinations before allowing an animal to enter.
